First, let’s put to rest the belief that you as a leader can motivate or control people directly. Motivation comes from within people, not from you.
What you as an owner have to do is learn how to get people to motivate themselves.
Most of us have spent our entire lifetimes trying to manage the behavior and emotions of other people, not only employees, but our families too. Therefore we live a life full of stress and disappointment. We must begin to learn that motivation comes form the inside and not the outside.
The first step is to deal with these paradoxes:
- To get more done – slow down
- To get your point across – stop talking and start listening
- To hit your numbers faster, focus on what you want to grow
- To really lead people, don’t push
